THURSDAY THIRTEEN - Great Cowboy Lyrics - Part I

I love country music, mostly because of the lyrics. So for today's Thursday Thirteen, I thought I'd share a list of just a few songs that I really love -- some new, some old. If you get a chance, check out some of these songs. You won't be sorry. Any of these lyrics tickle your fancy?

1. Firecracker – John Turner
When I light the fuse
I gotta get back quick
you gotta be careful with a dynamite stick
son of a gun she’s fun to handle

and she packs a punch like a roman candle
she’s a pack of black cats in a red paper wrapper
my little darlin’ is a firecracker

2. Our Song – Taylor Swift
I was riding shotgun with my hair undone in the front seat of his car
He's got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel
The other on my heartI look around, turn the radio down
He says baby is something wrong?
say nothing I was just thinking how we don't have a song
And he says...

Our song is the slamming screen door,
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date "man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have"
And when I got home ... before I said amen
Asking God if he could play it again

3. Who Says You Can’t Go Home – Bon Jovi and Sugarland
I spent 20 years trying to get out of this place
I was looking for something I couldn't replace
I was running away from the only thing I've ever known
Like a blind dog without a bone
I was a gypsy lost in the twilight zone
I hijacked a rainbow and crashed into a pot of gold
I been there, done that and I ain't lookin' back on the seeds I've sown,
Saving dimes, spending too much time on the telephone
Who says you can't go home

Who says you can't go home
There's only one place they call me one of their own
Just a hometown boy, born a rolling stone, who says you can't go home
Who says you can't go back, been all around the world and as a matter of fact
There's only one place left I want to go, who says you can't go home

4. Alcohol – Brad Paisley
I can make anybody pretty
I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight
With somebody twice your size
I been known to cause a few break ups
I been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
Or get you fired from Work

And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg and Bordeaux France
Been making the bars lots of big money
And helping white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
But college, now that was a ball
You had some of the best times
You'll never remember with me

5. Awful, Beautiful Life – Darryl Worley
I woke up early with a poundin' in my head
I'd been out the night before with all my friends
A little worried, kinda wonderin' what I did
I said, " Lord, please forgive me for my sins.
"My wife wanted to kill me, but she tried to save me first
"You're goin' if I have to drag your butt to church."

I love this crazy, tragic,
Sometimes almost magic,
Awful, beautiful life

6. Every Little Thing – Carlene Carter
I hear songs on the radio
They might be fast or they might be slow
But every song they play's got me thinkin' 'bout you
I see a fella walkin' down the street
He looks at me and he smiles real sweet
But he don't matter to me 'Cause I'm thinkin' 'bout you

Every little dream I dream about you
Every little thought I think about you
Drives me crazy when you go away
I oughta keep you locked up at home
And like a wild horse I wanna break you
I love you so much I hate you
Every little thing reminds me of you
Honey when you leave me here all alone

7. Keg in the Closet – Kenny Chesney
We had a dog named Bocephus livin in the front yard
He likes sleepin out on top of the car,
He drank beer out of a mason jar,
He'd climb up on everyone's bed.
A white frame house in a college town,
A bunch of people always hangin around,
No real problems we needed to drown,
But we tried our best anyway.
We went to class just to pass the time, back in 89'

We had a keg in the closet, pizza on the floor,
Left over from the night before.
Where we were going we didnt really care we had all we ever wanted,
And that keg in the closet.

8. Girls Lie Too – Terri Clark
We can’t wait to hear about your round of golf.
We love to see deer heads hanging on the wall,
An' we like Hooter’s for their hotwings too.
Other guys never cross our minds.
We don’t wonder what it might be like.
How could it be any better than it is with you?

Girls lie too,
An' we don’t care how much money you make,
Or what you drive or what you weigh:
Size don’t matter anyway.
Girls lie too:

Don’t think you’re the only ones,
Who bend it, break it, stretch it some.
We learn from you,
Girls lie too.

9. Something Like That – Tim McGraw
It was Labor Day weekend
I was seventeen
I bought a Coke and some gasoline
And I drove out to the county fair
When I saw her for the first time
She was standing there in the ticket line
And it all started right then and there
Oh, a sailer's sky made a perfect sunset
And that's the day I'll never forget

I had a barbeque stain on my white tee shirt
She was killing me in that miniskirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks
She had a suntan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that

10. T-R-O-U-B-L-E – Travis Tritt
Well, I play an old guitar from a nine till a half past one
I'm just tryin' to make a livin' watchin' everybody else havin' fun
Well, I don't miss much if it happens on a dance hall floor
Mercy, look what just walked through that door
Well, hello T-R-O-U-B-L-E
Tell me what in the world
You doin' A-L-O-N-E
Yeah, say hey, good L double O-K-I-N-G
Well, I smell T-R-O-U-B-L-E...

11. 19 Something – Mark Wills
I saw Star Wars at least 8 times
Had the pac-man pattern memorized
And I've seen the stuff they put insideStretch Armstrong
I was Roger Stauback back in my back yard
Had a shoebox full of baseball cards
And a couple of Evil Kinevil scars
On my right arm
Well, I was a kid when Elvis died
And my mama cried

It was 1970- something
In the world that I grew up in
Farrah Faucett hair-do days
Bell bottoms and 8-track tapes
Lookin' back now I can see me
And oh, man did I look cheesy
But I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'
It was 1970-something

12. Famous in a Small Town – Miranda Lambert
Every last one, route one, rural hearts got a story to tell
Every grandma, in law, ex girlfriend
Maybe knows it just a little too well
Whether you're late for church or you're stuck in jail
Hey words gonna get around
Everybody dies famous in a small town

13. Beer for my Horses – Toby Keith and Willie Nelson
Justice is the one thing you should always
got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we'll sing a victory tune
We'll all meet back at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses.

I didn't do a thirteen this week. It takes up so much time to visit everyone and say hi. But I did love me some country music lyrics, years ago when I was a bigger fan. Too many to name, but I'll share two:

"Past the Point of Rescue" by Hal Ketchum (1991)

Last night I dreamed you were back again--
Larger than life again,
Holding me tight again.
Placing those same kisses on my brow--
Sweeter than ever now.
Lord I remember how
I couldn't get enough of kissing.
Do you know how much you're missing?
No you don't, but I do.

Days like a slow train, trickle by,
And even the words that I write refuse to fly.
All I can hear is your song haunting me.
Can't get the melody
Out of my head, you see--
Distractions I've been using.
Do you know how much you're losing?
No you don't, but I do.

I swore I'd never fall like this again.
Fools like me never win--
Came to my knees again.
Can't close the door on likelihood
Things might be just as good.
I always believed they would.
Gotta let your love invite me.
Baby do you think it might be?
No you don't, but I do.

But I do,
And I wonder if I'm past the point of rescue.
Is no word from you at all
The best that you can do?
I never meant to push or shove you.
Do you know how much I love you?
No you don't, but I do.

"Melancholy Child" by Pam Tillis

A baby with a baby, just barely seventeen.
My mother mourned her innocence while she bounced me on her knee.
A daddy on the road added to her tears and trails.
Like silver rain, they fell upon this melancholy child.

The sounds of my childhood still linger in my song--
My mother's lullaby, that train that ran behind our home.
A whippoorwill on a windowsill, well it should've made me smile.
But everything sounds lonesome to a melancholy child.

Now a restless blood runs in our family.
I thought I could outrun the emptiness inside of me.
So I went a little crazy, I went a little wild,
Trying to outdistance my own melancholy child.

I met a kind and gentle man who thinks the world of me,
And when he looks my way it is a woman that he sees.
But when I can't explain to him the tears that fill my eyes,
He takes me in his arms and rocks his melancholy child.

You take a black irish temper and some solemn Cherokee,
A southern sense of humor and you got someone like me.
Now there are thorns on every rose, to this I'm reconciled,
But they're just a little sharper to a melancholy child.

And my own babe's eyes I see signs...
...of a melancholy child.
Heaven help us all another melancholy child.

"Something Like That" is my all-time favorite country song, "Bless the Broken Road" notwithstanding. (Our wedding song) I also love the Darryl Worley song you quoted, and 19-something.

Sorry, no TT from me today. I'm sick. Ugh.

Buncha party-poopers, here LOL. Y'all can be excused, of course for viruses and manuscript brain-deadness.

Patti, your 13 reminds me of my days at the satellite store where we had CMT on all day long on the demo TV...I fell in love with Pam Tillis, Allison Krause, early Shania Twain, and the guy who sings T-R-O-U-B-L-E (great videos).

My fave for lyrics? Pam Tillis The River and the Highway (last two stanzas):

And every now and then
He offers her a shoulder
Every now and then
She overflows
Every now and then
A bridge crosses over
It's a moment that every lover knows

And she runs (and he rolls)
She's a river (he's a highway)
Where she goes (where he goes)
Time will tell.
Heaven knows
She can't go with him (he can't go with her)
And she runs all by herself
And he rolls all by himself

Fare thee well

Gosh, I'm teary just remembering her voice singing this :-)
